How to Find a Good Handyman

Sooner or later, you will need help from a handyman for your home. What kind of help, you ask? Well, when things stop working in your home, we generally need some help to fix whatever issue requires fixing. Who do most homeowners rely on for this help? A handyman.

Now, sometimes this will involve inviting a stranger into our home. How should we go about finding the best person for the job? Most of us have a trusting nature; however, that may not be enough. There are certain things to consider when looking for a handyman.

The following are some tips to consider when making a decision about whom we will trust as a person as well as having the skills to complete the job correctly the first time.

1. We need to identify what skills are needed for the handyman to complete the job. For example, would you look for a person with electrical experience when your toilet has a leak? Of course not.
2. Obtaining recommendations for the person you are considering is important. Recommendations can come from others who have used this person in the past and have been successful. You can also check online reviews.
3. When you call this person, do they return your call promptly?
4. Is this person easy to understand? Does this person appear to understand your needs, and does he/she give you a written estimate for the required work?
5. Check out this person’s insurance and license(s). Generally, hiring a licensed and insured person is the best idea, even if the person is a bit more expensive.
6. Shop around; get multiple written quotes for the job. The handyman needs to develop a scope for the needed work that is mutually agreed upon. Is the work guaranteed? Is there a warranty for the work? Ask for written work and payment schedules. Does this schedule meet your needs?
7. If the handyman should ask for more than 10% of the money prior to starting the job, this is a red flag! It questions how much capital this person has at their disposal.
8. Once the project is started, payments should be incremental based on the completed work. Always hold off on making the final payment until you examine the completed job and are totally satisfied with the work.

Don’t let yourself get caught up in any OUTRAGEOUS work based on the person’s word alone. Remember, we need to be our own advocate when hiring someone to help.
